When I ask her how my daughter tells me the way to write a review is just to say what you think. That sounds easy, but with a collection of stories like Reconciliation by Dorothy Speak it is not so straight forward. There is just so much to think about. If you like happy endings, or hopeful endings you might not find the stories to your taste. They were however slices of life I appreciated, but feel a bit uneasy about using the word enjoyed. They are tales of the shadows, stories of ordinary lives, with which I can identify, but they have unsettling turns. I feel the sort of uneasiness I felt after watching Twilight Zone as a teenager. In the TV show it was the unreal that made me uneasy, in these stories it is because they feel so very real. I definitely find myself identifying with the teenager, or child, or busy professional. Each protagonist seems reconciled to the reality they have discovered through the progression of their story; there are no rose garden promises. In my opinion these are the best types of stories, fiction that rings true, or maybe they are reality through the distortion of a house of horrors mirror. Of course I always appreciate a story from familiar era mentions Gun Smoke, Paladin, grab my attention as indicators of a time I know. I did find the labeling of the "ghetto of wartime house" unsettling as in my youth those where the warmer neighborhoods, better places to be a kid. I suppose another factor I appreciate about any short story is that I can see for a few moments through different eyes. Every episode is a thought provoking adventure, and I will reread them many times. This author doesn't need my effusive praise; still I feel it is a five star collection.Product details

Reconciliation Dorothy Eileen Speak 9780988045507 Books Reviews
I found this a very quick read, skipping from one captivating story to another, fast paced and well written. Check out 'The Wife Tree' by the same author.
This book is excellently written and, as I know the author and went to the same school and grew up in the same small southwestern Ontario town, I found it very compelling.
These imaginative stories grab at you and keep you enthralled. Ms Speak's characters are quite flawed but very real and believable. There is no "bronze crook of the arm" in these tales. In fact, I think I knew some of the people and places that Dorothy has based her stories on.
I did, however, find every story in this book quite depressing and have lent it to several others who have felt the same. I found
myself warning people to read it in the sunshine or when they were light hearted to counteract the depressing vibe that runs
throughout.
That being said, I found this book had impressive writing and was a very good read.
Mrs. Hishon would be proud!
